CAT5™ Catalytic Technology

Formalin-fixed tissues often yield poor quality RNA/DNA due to crosslinks and adducts. Extraction methods that use heat can cause further fragmentation. CAT5™ technology uses a catalytic approach to efficiently remove formaldehyde damage, improving nucleic acid recovery, integrity, and performance in PCR, microarray, or NGS.

RNA Isolation from Fresh Tissue and Cells

Purify high quality total RNA from either cultured cells or fresh tissue in as little as 20 minutes. High yields (up to 120 μg) can be obtained using a simple and quick column-based protocol. Contaminating DNA is removed using a DNase treatment step, and the protocol avoids toxic chemicals such as phenol or chloroform.

DNA Gel Extraction Kit

Biotium’s DNA Gel Extraction Kit is a silica-gel spin column based DNA extraction kit designed to purify 40 bp-40 kb DNA fragments from agarose gels in TAE or TBE buffer. Each column has a maximum binding capacity of 10 ug DNA. Biotium’s DNA Gel Extraction Kit removes GelRed® and GelGreen® Nucleic Acid Gel Stains, along with other commonly used nucleic acid gel stains. The purified DNA is compatible with common downstream applications such as transformation, sequencing, PCR, and restriction digests.

FAQs

Contamination from genomic DNA is a big concern because it can interfere with downstream applications. The RNAstorm™ kit includes an optimized DNase digestion step that removes contaminating genomic DNA without significantly affecting RNA yield. While this step is optional, it is highly recommended.

The most significant variable that affects the total amount of RNA or DNA obtained is the quality of the sample itself (i.e., the type and amount of tissue and the care taken in isolation and preservation of the sample). Assuming a reasonable sample quality, you can expect to obtain more than 1 ug using the RNAstorm™ or DNAstorm™ kits.

Yes. Good quality libraries can be obtained, providing that the RNA is of sufficiently high quality. For Illumina sequencing, a DV200 of at least 30% is recommended, and samples that provide at least 1 µg of RNA should be used.
