Staff Scientist (Chemistry)

JOB TITLE: Staff Scientist (Chemistry)

LOCATION: Fremont, California

JOB FUNCTIONS:

This Staff Scientist (Chemistry) position focuses on the production of fluorescent reagents and improvement of manufacturing processes. This position will also involve developing novel fluorescent reagents for various detection platforms such as flow cytometry, microscopy, and live cell imaging systems.

JOB OBJECTIVE:

Under direct supervision from the VP of Research and Development, the Staff Scientist will perform R&D and production projects to synthesize organic fluorescent dyes and related compounds utilizing/modifying existing protocols. The Staff Scientist will also design and execute new protocols for custom orders and new production items. The Staff Scientist will be expected to use his/her extensive knowledge of chemistry to successfully complete complex multi-step reactions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Under general guidelines, independently plan, organize, and perform the synthesis of new and existing products to meet product specifications. Plans production schedule for on-time delivery of products
  • Write, review and revise, as necessary, manufacturing and QC protocols for clarity, process improvement and/or material changes as prescribed by procedures and policies
  • Independently adapt or modify methods to achieve technical objectives
  • Address and report problems in daily production and propose effective countermeasures
  • Proactively identify areas for improvement and drive efficiency results
  • Use highly specialized equipment and instrumentation in daily functions
  • Critically analyze data and interpret experimental results
  • Write protocols and lab notebooks documenting processes and improvements consistent with ISO 9001 standards
  • Work as an active team member assisting the implementation of new processes within the production group
  • Maintain a high level of professional expertise through familiarity with current scientific literature with respect to compounds, reactions, and processes
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated competence in reaction design, process improvement, and product purification
  • Depth of synthetic experience from milligram to kilogram scale

Chemistry Technician I (Chemistry)

JOB TITLE: Chemistry Technician I

LOCATION: Fremont, California

JOB OBJECTIVE:

Under the direct supervision from a senior chemist, perform chemical purifications using chromatography including preparative HPLC or gravity chromatography; carry out chemical synthesis using standard protocols; carry out chemical analyses using modern instruments including analytical HPLC, LC-MS, TLC, UV/Vis and fluorescence spectrophotometry.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Perform purifications of chemical compounds by preparative HPLC or gravity chromatography
  • Perform production of chemical compounds by following ISO protocols
  • Perform analytical HPLC on compounds
  • Must possess sufficient chemistry knowledge and HPLC experiences to develop HPLC conditions for both analytical and preparative purposes using chemical structure information provided
  • Perform LC-MS on chemical compounds and interpret the results
  • Perform UV/Vis and/or fluorescence spectrophotometry on dyes
  • Responsible for the maintenance and minor repair of the above instruments
  • Write protocols for laboratory procedures and accurately and clearly document results and observations in lab notebooks
  • Work as an active team member assisting the implementation of new processes within the chemistry group and the company
  • Maintain high level of professional expertise through familiarity with current scientific literature with respect to compounds, reactions, and processes

Bioconjugation Scientist (Bioconjugation)

JOB TITLE: Bioconjugation Scientist (Bioconjugation)

LOCATION: Fremont, CA

JOB OBJECTIVE:

Under direct supervision from the VP of Research and Development, perform synthesis, purification, and characterization of antibody/biomolecule conjugates of fluorescent dyes, fluorescent proteins, tandem dyes, enzyme reporters, and polymeric scaffolds. Research and development leading to commercialization of bioconjugates for research applications. The successful candidate will possess a strong background in chemistry and bioconjugation chemistry and have experience performing bioconjugation reactions, protein purification, and requisite analytical techniques.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Synthesize bioconjugates using established chemistries
  • Contribute to the development of new bioconjugation methodologies
  • Evaluate new bioconjugation methods from the literatures
  • Purify bioconjugates by size exclusion chromatography, ion-exchange chromatography, affinity chromatography and hydrophobic interaction chromatography
  • Optimize protein and antibody conjugation and purification methods
  • Develop and implement assays for quality control
  • Create SOPs and transfer to manufacturing
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting to manufacturing
  • Working knowledge of AKTA platform or equivalents
  • Characterize bioconjugates using multiple techniques such as UV/Vis, fluorescence, HPLC, MS and particle analyzer
  • Mentor research associates in experimental design, data interpretation, laboratory and instrument techniques and best practices
  • Operates lab instruments according to established procedures and prepares reagents as needed
  • Critically analyzes, summarizes, and reports data generated from experiments, draws conclusions from experimental results and recommends and executes required follow-up actions with consideration of prior experimental findings (self and others) with minimal supervision
  • Presents data at team meetings or to small focus groups that may include representatives from other departments and/or outside parties and participates in brainstorming and troubleshooting sessions within or between teams, offering and implementing solutions to problems
  • Performs and is involved in the planning and documentation of verification activities to ensure that newly developed products meet the pre-determined product specifications
  • May facilitate the transfer research products to Manufacturing/Operations and is involved in completion and release of enabling documentation for newly developed products by ensuring all relevant technical information is incorporated into the appropriate documents
  • Maintains familiarity with current technology related information and/or literature and conducts project related information searches and may be involved in extensive literature searches
  • Trains others in laboratory procedures and processes, and in the design, execution, and analysis of experiments. Provides feedback to supervisor on training progress
  • Performs other duties and assumes additional departmental responsibilities as required. Performs other assignments and tasks as directed
  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills within and between departments. Maintains appropriate laboratory records, notebooks, and other formal company documentation, as required
  • Works under minimal supervision, receiving no instructions on routine work, general instructions on new assignments, and detailed instructions or training on new applications or responsibilities
  • Works on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors, and exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies to determine appropriate conclusion and follow up action

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD degree in Chemistry or Biological Science with 3 year experience in bioconjugation or MS/B Sc degree in Chemistry or Biological Science with 7 year experience in bioconjugation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Solid knowledge in chemistry, biochemistry and fluorescent dye chemistry
  • Strong analytical methods such as chromatography, spectrophotometry, gel electrophoresis and particle analyzer

Research Associate I, Bioscience

Descriptive Summary

Under supervision from Biotium scientists, perform biological testing of fluorescent dyes and related reagents. Perform production and quality control testing of assay kit components following standardized protocols.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Generates reproducible experimental testing data in support of new product development, customer troubleshooting, and product improvement.
  • Performs production and quality control testing of products in compliance with Biotium’s ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
  • Follows established protocols with minimal direct supervision.
  • Makes detailed and general experimental observations, analyzes data, and presents data regularly in department meetings.
  • Consistently and accurately records and curates R&D and production data.

Core Functions

  • Perform biological testing for a variety of applications including fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, plate-based assays, nucleic acid isolation/analysis, PCR, protein analysis, cell culture, and other cell biology, molecular biology, or biochemistry techniques.
  • Perform production and quality control testing of products, with associated record keeping in compliance with ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
  • Contribute to development and improvement of production and testing protocols.

Industry Knowledge: Experience with cell culture, microbiology, nucleic acid analysis, fluorescence imaging, or related techniques a plus. Experience in reagent industry a plus.

Compensation & Benefits

Starting salary $65,000 to $70,000 per year dependent on experience/education. Company-paid benefits include: medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage, 401K, sick leave, vacation, and company holidays.
