DiOC2(3) (3,3′-Diethyloxacarbocyanine, iodide) has been used for measuring membrane potentials in bacteria. The green fluorescent dye forms red fluorescent aggregates with increasing membrane potential. The spectral shifting phenomenon has been exploited to measure membrane potential ratiometrically.
